Chronic Kidney Disease and Homoeopathy

Chronic kidney disease, commonly known as chronic kidney failure, is characterised by the progressive loss of renal function. Wastes and excess fluids are removed from your blood by your kidneys, which are subsequently excreted as urine. Advanced chronic renal disease can lead to dangerously high amounts of fluid, electrolytes, and wastes in the body.

You may have minimal indications or symptoms in the early stages of chronic renal disease. It's possible that you won't discover you have kidney disease until it's too late.

Chronic renal disease treatment focuses on delaying the course of kidney damage, generally by addressing the underlying cause. Controlling the cause, however, may not be enough to prevent kidney disease from developing. Without mechanical filtration (dialysis) or a kidney transplant, chronic kidney disease can proceed to end-stage kidney failure, which is deadly.

Chronic kidney disease develops when a disease or condition inhibits kidney function for months or years, causing kidney damage to deteriorate.

Chronic kidney disease is caused by a variety of diseases and situations.

  • Type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Glomerulonephritis an inflammation of the kidney's filtering units (glomeruli).
  • Interstitial nephritis an inflammation of the kidney's tubules and surrounding structures.
  • Polycystic kidney disease or other inherited kidney diseases.
  • Prolonged obstruction of the urinary tract, from conditions such as enlarged prostate, kidney stones and some cancers.
  • Vesicoureteral reflux, a condition that causes urine to back up into your kidneys.
  • Recurrent kidney infection, also called pyelonephritis.
  • Drugs induced, excessive use of renal toxic drugs like NSAIDS is also one of the leading cause of Chronic kidney diseases.

If kidney damage proceeds slowly, signs and symptoms of chronic renal disease emerge over time. Kidney failure can result in an accumulation of fluid or waste, as well as electrolyte imbalances. Kidney failure can result in the following symptoms, depending on how serious it is:

Sign and Symptoms

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Sleep problems
  • Urinating more or less
  • Decreased mental sharpness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Swelling of feet and ankles
  • Dry, itchy skin
  • High blood pressure (hypertension) that's difficult to control
  • Shortness of breath, if fluid builds up in the lungs
  • Chest pain, if fluid builds up around the lining of the heart

Signs and symptoms of kidney disease are often nonspecific. This means they can also be caused by other illnesses. Because your kidneys are able to make up for lost function, you might not develop signs and symptoms until irreversible damage has occurred.

Urea and Creatinine

To assess stability: compare to previous results

Urinalysis and quantification of proteinuria

Hematuria and proteinuria may indicate glomerular disease and need for biopsy.

To identify hyperkalemia (high potassium level in blood) and acidosis.

Low albumin: consider malnutrition, inflammation

Full blood count(±Fe, ferritin, folate, B12)

To exclude anemia and diagnose viral and bacterial infection in kidney.

Lipids, glucose ±HbA1c

To check cardiovascular risk which is high in CKD

Renal ultrasound

Done only if there are obstructive urinary symptoms, persistent hematuria, and family history of polycystic kidney disease.

Chronic renal illness may wreak havoc on the entire body. Complications that may arise include:

  • Swelling in your arms and legs, elevated blood pressure, or fluid in your lungs are all symptoms of fluid retention (pulmonary edema).
  • Hyperkalemia is a rapid increase in potassium levels in your blood that can compromise your heart's function and be life-threatening.
  • Anemia.
  • Coronary artery disease.
  • Bone fragility and a higher risk of bone fractures.
  • Reduced sexual desire, erectile problems, or fertility.
  • Damage to the central nervous system, which can lead to concentration problems, personality changes, and seizures.
  • Immune response is lowered, making you more susceptible to infection.
  • Complications of pregnancy that pose a risk to both the mother and the developing baby.
  • End-stage renal disease causes irreversible damage to your kidneys, necessitating dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival.
